Act I
The courtyard of the state prison. In the background, the main gate and a high wall, over which trees protrude. In the closed gate itself is a small gate that is opened for individual pedestrians. Next to the gate, the gatekeeper's room. The backdrops, the audience on the left, present the prisoners' residential buildings; all windows have grilles, and the numbered doors are covered with iron, and kept with strong bolts. In the forefront is the door to the prison guard's apartment. To the right are trees bordered with iron railings, which, along with a garden gate, mark the entrance to the palace garden.
